Marathon Loadout Guide: The Essentials and Luxuries for Every Raid
Mastering Your Loadout in Marathon: Essential Strategies
In the heart of Marathon’s extraction shooter experience, your survival hinges not just on sheer reflexes but on the careful construction of your loadout. Whether you’re a veteran or a newcomer still figuring out the interaction between maximalist visuals and layered mechanics, every raid begins with a critical decision: what to carry, and what should stay in your stash at base.
The Non-Negotiables: Weapons, Ammo & Healing
At the core of every runner’s equipment, three categories are absolutely indispensable: weapons, ammunition, and healing items. Based on in-game encounters, the most successful players typically field two weapons—one specialized for close quarters, such as an SMG or shotgun, and another for engaging enemies at range, like a marksman rifle or scoped carbine. Swapping to a weapon that utilizes Volt ammo can also counter shielded UESC robots.
Ammo management quickly separates the pros from the unlucky. Semi-automatic firearms use fewer rounds, making them a favorite for extended runs, while automatic options—notably LMGs—demand a bigger investment of slots for stacks of ammunition. Plan for 2–3 stacks per weapon, expanding to 4–5 if you choose to risk a solo approach with a single gun. Aggression is rarely rewarded in Marathon; ammo scarcity means discretion is a central survival tactic.
For healing, split your inventory evenly between Patch Kits for health and Shield Charges for your defensive field. Prioritize the standard variants—they’re economical and easy to restock from Contracts or the game’s Armory. Advanced kits offer substantial emergency healing, but depleted variants are best used or discarded mid-raid, as they can’t be secured in your vault. Harnessing the Smart Heal feature lets you automate your triage and keep your focus where it matters: on tactical play and loot management.
- 2 weapons (close and long-range preferred)
- 2-3 stacks of ammo per weapon
- 3 Patch Kits (standard)
- 3 Shield Charges (standard)
Upgrading with Luxuries: Shields, Backpacks, Cores & Implants
Once essentials are loaded, it’s time to eye upgrades. Shields and backpacks are true game-changers: shields absorb incoming damage, while bigger backpacks fatten your inventory capacity and by extension your haul potential. Even without a Shield Implant, you’ll start with a base level of shielding, but implants can take your survivability to the next level.
Experiment with Cores and Implants as you progress. Two Cores and three Implants (head, torso, leg) can be tailored to synergize with your playstyle. Risk management is crucial; don’t equip your rarest gear unless you’re confident in your odds of exfiltration. Most players learn to refine their loadouts raid-by-raid, bringing out upgraded luxuries stepwise as confidence and resources grow.
What Not To Bring: Consumables & Unslotted Items
Rookie mistake: overloading your kit with consumables like Cleanse items or temporary buffs (e.g., Energy Amp, Cardio Kick)—these often just waste space during standard raids. They’re best banked for when your playstyle matures, or brought along only when using advanced, expanded backpacks. Always review your loadout for redundant mods or unequipped Cores before entering a raid to maximize room for new loot and prevent lost opportunity.
The onboarding curve for Marathon is steep but rewarding. Always lead with weapons, ammo, and healing. Layer in improved gear systematically. And remember, inventory discipline is the silent key to survival and consistent loot upgrades in this high-stakes, extraction-driven FPS universe.
